Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church
History
The Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church was organized July 16, 1940, with 26 members under the leadership of the lat Rev. E.T. Johnson of Elkton, TN. The first worship service was held in a small storefront on the corner of 15th Street and Martindale Avenue. God blessed the faith and hard work of the church, and Mount Moriah grew as the good news of Jesus Christ was preached. That same year, Mount Moriah began construction on a new sanctuary, and shared worship facilities with the 16th Street Baptist Church (now known as the Oasis of Hope Baptist Church) where the late Rev. Albert Batts was the pastor.
With continuous faith in God and hard work, the church paid off its mortgage in full, ahead of schedule. Mount Moriah celebrated God’s blessing with a “Mortgage Burning” celebration on May 22, 1960. Shortly thereafter, God positioned Mount Moriah for even greater blessings by allowing the construction of Interstate 70 to require the church to relocate. On March 31, 1965, God blessed Mount Moriah to purchase property at our present location, 2349-51 N Keystone Way. Ground breaking ceremonies were conducted on April 14, 1965, with Dr. F. Benjamin Davis officiating.
Mount Moriah grew in number and in spirit under Pastor Johnson’s leadership, and God called twelve ministers to serve under him. Pastor Johnson served as Pastor of Mount Moriah for 43 years, and retired as Pastor Emeritus on January 1, 1984.
Mount Moriah was without a Pastor until December of 1984, when Rev. Charles Powell of Nashville, TN was called to pastor. Pastor Powell and his family commuted weekly from Nashville until they permanently relocated to Indianapolis in the summer of 1985. Under Pastor Powell’s leadership, several new ministries (including New Members Class) were added. Pastor Powell served Mount Moriah until June of 1992.
On September 5, 1993, Rev. Sammy Brooks of Mississippi was called to be the third pastor of Mount Moriah. Under Pastor Brooks’ leadership, the church grew numerically and several new fellowships were added. Mount Moriah had Spirit-filled revivals in summer and winter, and improvements were made to the church property an building. Pastor Brooks served Mount Moriah until August of 1995.
Mount Moriah was without a pastor from August to November of 1995. During that time, the church was in constant prayer that God would send us a leader after His own heart, a strong and humble man who loved God and would preach His word without compromise. On Saturday, November 23, 1995, GOD ANSWERED OUR PRAYERS and appointed Rev. Arthur L. Sample III, of Pickens, Mississippi to pastor Mount Moriah.
Under God’s direction, Pastor Sample has led Mount Moriah to even greater spiritual increase. Hundreds of souls have been added to the Body of Christ, and a passionate, faithful gospel is being preached. Ministries of teaching and training for your and old have multiplied, as the Holy Spirit directs our strong man of God to develop true disciples by teaching God’s Kingdom principles (respecting God’s Divine Authority; obeying God’s Word absolutely; keeping fellowship with God through prayer and Bible study; being a faithful steward of tithes, offerings, time and talents; and worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth).
